ARt @ knox
We are fortunate to have a thriving Art program at Knox!
Please check out our galleries to see some of our most recent work - we are pretty proud of ourselves!
Instructors:
Mr Cliff Rechel (B. Ed) - Mr Rechel is a veteran Knox staff member, having taught here since 1992. He is a tech genius and interested in all things artistic. At school, Mr Rechel can be found in the Info Tech room helping students realize their visions on a screen, or in the new add-on Art Room working with our Grade Sevens to fulfill their artistic dreams. Outside of school, Mr Rechel can be found gardening with his wife, Joyce, playing his classical guitar, hanging out with his grandson or enjoying a really good cup of coffee.
Ms Karen Nightingale (B. Ed, M. Ed) - Ms Nightingale has been happily teaching Art at Knox since 2001. She loves assisting her students in exploring many different areas of Art and teaching them the skills and knowledge they need to achieve their visions. A painter, a potter, a printmaker and a mixed media and encaustic artist, Ms Nightingale has many years of hands on experience creating her own artwork. In addition to teaching, Ms Nightingale is also the proud Mom of two boys, Leo and Gavin - her greatest creations of all.
Required Supplies:
Students are required to come prepared with a pencil and eraser to every class. All other materials will be supplied in class. Students have the option of bringing their own supplies to class (ex. higher quality pencil crayons) if they chose. Art 9 students will also need a sketchbook. A high quality, low cost sketchbook is offered through Ms Nightingale at cost ($4). Sourcing out your own sketchbook for this purpose is discouraged. A no cost option is also available.
Evaluation:
Letter grades are based on both product (project work) and process (sketchbook assignments and class evaluations).
For every project, a specified skill(s) and concept(s) will be outlined in the introduction of the assignment. Students will participate in a formal mid-term and end of term portfolio evaluation to determine their letter grade. At any time, students may request an informal 'Mini-Evaluation' - a teacher/student conference that will provide specific feedback and offer an in-progress letter grade.
Classroom Expectations:
Mr Rechel and Ms Nightingale set a high behavioural standard for students to ensure the safety and enjoyment of all.
Students are expected to:
- arrive on time and with necessary supplies.
- pay attention to instructions and demonstrations.
- refrain from interfering with others' ability to learn.
- use supplies in a respectful, non-wasteful manner.
- clean up after him/herself and contribute to the general classroom maintenance.
- refrain from any behaviour or language that others (classmates and staff) could find offensive. This includes the use of profain, racist or homophobic language.
- make an effort to complete all assigned projects and keep track of their progress.
